Perfect gift for my perfect outdoor man.
If you're shopping for an anorak and cross shopping, there's a good chance you landed on this in your comparisons. I'm 6'1 180lbs and slender/athletic build, and I'm swimming in my XL and I love it! I bought a size (or two) up because I knew I wanted something extra roomy to wear a bulky knit sweater or a layer or two under and still have space. But of course, the shoulders ride down a bit more than a proper fit would. I'm sure if I had a body builder's shoulders and traps then that extra meat would help the jacket sit "nicer." It's like a wool, winter poncho on me. I got it at the "end" of the winter season here in Nova Scotia, so I'll have to update this later having put it through its paces a bit better.
I had to pay customs for it to come in, but no real delays; it was handled by Fedex and I was able to pay online ahead of time as well. I needed to shift the shipping address, and customer service was great in assisting - all via email.
I wore it the other day on top of a sweater while I was shovelling some snow and I was sweating, even with the side zips open for full ventilation. I love that with my wool garments the snow will stick, maybe matte a bit, but you can just brush it off, so it doesn't soak in and weigh down the fabric that sometimes happens with the synthetics.
I'd agree, this wool fabric is not really itchy. I'm sensitive, not a Sasquatch, so even cashmere garments can be a bit itchy on me. This, though not as soft, is similarly non-itchy. I have a fantastic wool sweater, also Swedish, and that's a bit less comfortable to wear if I don't have a reasonable base layer on. This, I can wear with a thin, long sleeve base layer and not be bothered at all. I have worn a t-shirt under, and I didn't find it bothered me.
I'm always looking for where the garment is built better, since I'd like to think if I'm paying more, I'm getting more - and something that's probably going to last longer. I like the double line of stitching at the pocket corners to reinforce - I'd usually do that, or similar, just to mitigate a ripped pocket later. I like the leather edging around high wear areas. I like the extra button sewn on the back so that the threads from the main buttons at the front neck area aren't pulling directly on the fabric, which is also doubled up. There's also a small additional patch of fabric in the arm pit area just to give you a bit more mobility.
I have no issues with the fact it's a pullover, as I had considered the Kirjas as an alternative, but it didn't have the side zips, and I actually liked the (limited) reviews I could find on this hood. Having the XL and the fact I'm swimming in an oversized garment probably makes it a bit easier to put on since there's just more room to navigate. Hindsight, I might've preferred the Kebne as it has nearly every aspect I was looking for, but I really liked the look of this one over that - wanted that anorak look. This one's unique. I debated the Hunting Anorak over this Abisko, and I wish this one had that back pocket and the bigger patch, but the difference between the two, for me, wasn't worth the $200.
The hood, which I think is super unique as there isn't another wool outer garment, or even many outer layers that gives you this; was one of the selling features for me. I guessed it was going to be versatile, and because of its size, would keep me warm. I was right. And because of the design of the buttons and zipper in the front, it almost negates needing a scarf - big plus! Its massive size presents one issue, which is that if it's not zipped up and sucked in tight, it presents a visual barrier that blocks some of your field of view when looking down. This has been annoying when I've left it loose, and happen to be doing something like sitting down in the car and driving. However, it's simple enough to just fold it down or undo the buttons so nothing's holding it up, so by no means is this an "issue."
All in all, I love this garment! I have another rather expensive wool outer layer, so I might be torn to wear one vs the other.
If there's enough demand for it, the only thing I'd ask for is more pockets, or at least 2 slot pockets in the main chest one so that your phone doesn't roll around with a set of keys or something - a tiny bit of organisation would be great. Similarly, an arm pocket to put a phone, or that rear passthrough so you can throw your scarf/hat in would be amazing!
I love both pairs o pants I have bought. I am not happy with the features of the anorak. It is difficult to button up and looks funny with collar open. The hood is too long. Don’t understand why the hood would go way past your face. I plan to have a seamstress repurpose it where it is more comfortable. Was hoping I would love it as much as I do your pants.
This is handsdown the best investment ive ever done.
The fabric is amazing. Had it on a two day trip. Never went cold or to warm.
Close to open flame etc and no problems.
Superb and fast response on my before buy questions.
Size is perfect if using the measure system on the page.
My purchase was tied up in US customs for 30+ days, it was very frustrating and disappointing. Then I finally got confirmation that it cleared the government bureaucracy.
Once it arrived I was thrilled as the quality and craftsmanship was far greater than expected.
It is very warm, fits great and I get a ton of compliments.
Certainly well worth the wait
